Started off slow, didn't really get into it until the end. Ended abruptly.

The Line is a clever mix of dystopian fiction, the paranormal, a slight dash of romance, and a bunch of important lessons

It took a while to get into the story, but pretty good. Only it ended very abruptly. I suppose there'll be a sequel (which I look forward to), but still, what an awkward ending!

A pretty good book, although not the most exciting and riveting of books I've read. It doesn't make you think as much as some utopia/post-apocalyptic books. Still decent and a good, fun read. I'd recommend it.

In this futuristic debut, Rachel lives with her widowed mother, who is a housekeeper on the Property, an estate that borders the Line, a protective barrier that runs along the U.S. border. After a hostile force, the Korusal, blasted the area with atomic bombs, the Line has been rigidly maintained to keep out the Others: people who were trapped in the bombs’ fallout. Rachel is intensely curious about what life is like in the Away, beyond the Line, and when she finds a message from an Other pleading for help, she jumps into action. Her efforts trigger a series of events that not only compromise everyone on the Property but also reveal dangerous secrets. This is the first in a series.

An invisible, uncrossable physical barrier encloses the Unified States. The Line is the part of the border that lopped off part of the country, dooming the inhabitants to an unknown fate when the enemy used a banned weapon. It's said that bizarre creatures and superhumans live on the other side, in Away. Nobody except tough old Ms. Moore would ever live next to the Line. Nobody but Rachel and her mother, who went to live there after Rachel's dad died in the last war. It's a safe, quiet life. Until Rachel finds a mysterious recorded message that can only have come from Away. The voice is asking for help. Who sent the message? Why is her mother so protective? And to what lengths is Rachel willing to go in order to do what she thinks is right?
