A coming of age story told in the worst of times. It’s January 1, 2015 and the UK has just become the first country to implement carbon rationing in a dramatic attempt to slow global warming. Each citizen is given a carbon card with a certain amount of usage allowed for the year, if you go over your limit before the year is up… well that’s your problem then. Beginning rationing in the heart of one of the coldest winters is just the beginning of Laura Brown’s problems. Her dad has just lost his job since in times of rationing only the more practical jobs are needed, and does a complete one-eighty, trying to make the family more self-sufficient. First he plants a couple of vegetables in the back yard, and the next day he brings home a pig that he seems to care more about than Laura! Her sister seems to be handling it the worst and can’t come to terms with not being able to go to Ibiza every weekend! Her mother has had it with the lot of them and decides to take some time for herself… whose going to be the parent in this mess? So after a bumpy start, Laura’s family seems to be getting the hang of rationing – leaving all the heat off all winter long. At long last spring comes! They think they are out of the woods now and Laura can finally start to focus more on her band the Dirty Angels, and her possible love interest, the boy next door. Summer comes just as ferociously as the winter and a heat wave covers Europe. The Thames Water has put pressure on the government to install smart meters so that the country can begin to ration water as well. If only the rest of Europe had tried something similar before a fire breaks out in France and seems to be unstoppable for days. After a long summer of praying for rain fall comes and threatens the tide levels. The water barriers that have held off floods for decades have never faced such extreme water levels, and the people of London begin preparing for the worst. Told in a diary style, we follow Laura Brown from bad to worse during the entire year 2015. Lloyd tries to make it as convincing of a diary as possible by including scrap book pages. The reader can see that the carbon rationing is too extreme and way too late, especially if the entire world is not on board! possibly one of the best books i have ever read. A must for anybody, if you care about the climat or not.

Worth your time to read. Combines the life of a teen with the possible chaos of climate change.
