A very slow book but reading it definitely pays off later in the series, where the trilogy really shines. Character and universe development does happen excruciatingly slow but the relate-ability of the characters and Chloe's internal conflict between whether she really has powers or if she can see the dead more than makes up for it. If you are able to endure one slow book for two books of awesomeness (Awakening and Reckoning) then I definitely recommend this series. Also: 1000x better than Twilight, not even fair to compare this gem with the dribble Stephanie Meyer called a book.

I really, really liked this book. Although I don't like ghosts and stuff - which is why I read with sunlight streaming in through my window mid-afternoon - and it scares me, I thought it had amazing suspense and everything was so perfect. It sucked me in, and I read the whole thing in an entire day. I usually find at least a few faults in the book, but it's difficult in such a great book. Even though you probably can guess the main character ends up with Derek, it's still pretty hard to figure our if it'll be Derek or Simon. Most books, it would be more predictable. Unless you are really into that horror and scary stuff, I suggest reading this in broad daylight though. If I'd read it before bed, I don't think I would have got to sleep that night. Great book!

I LOVED this book. It had really good parts and had lots of suspense. A type of book where you don't want to move until you finish the whole series!!!

I really liked this book, and reallly enjoyed reading it. It's really great and very, very creative!!! Thumbs up, and 5-stars! But I really did wish this book had a different front cover----misunderstands people!!!, like it did to me! Don't judge by the cover and read it!! Finished it in one day!!!!

I LOVE this book! It has a twist of drama, scary and a bit a romance in it. All tied up in one! I am reading the rest of the darkest powers series! Kelley Armstrong, YOU ROCK!

Chloe Saunders sees dead people. Yes, like in the films. The problem is, in real life saying you see ghosts gets you a one-way ticket to the psych ward. And at 15, all Chloe wants to do is fit in at school and maybe get a boy to notice her. But when a particularly violent ghost haunts her, she gets noticed for all the wrong reasons. Her seemingly crazed behaviour earns her a trip to Lyle House, a centre for disturbed teens. At first Chloe is determined to keep her head down. But then her room mate disappears after confessing she has a poltergeist, and some of the other patients also seem to be manifesting paranormal behaviour. Could that be a coincidence? Or is Lyle House not quite what it seems…? Chloe realizes that if she doesn’t uncover the truth, she could be destined for a lifetime in a psychiatric hospital. Or could her fate be even worse…? Can she trust her fellow students, and does she dare reveal her dark secret?

Chloe Saunders is your average teenage girl. She lives in Buffalo, with her aunt and attends an art school. She spends time with her friends, talks to boys, that kind of thing. Then she meets a ghost. This ghost is terrifying and grotesque. The interaction sends her into a breakdown, which gets her sent to a group home, Lyle House. Lyle House is for mentally-ill teens who must work through their problems, or at least that is what it is advertised to be. Bizarre situations are occurring at this house, not only with herself, but also with other residents of the house. And no matter how much she tries not to believe it, Chloe sees more ghosts. Through strange events, the secrets everyone is hiding spills out, connections are made, and soon nothing is as it was thought to be. But with secrets.... there are always people who want to keep them quiet.
