Summary
Add a SummaryāAre you a Gifted Child looking for Special Opportunities?ā The ad catches the eye of Reynie Muldoon, an orphan who doesnāt fit in at his orphanage one bit thanks to his advanced intellect. To receive his Special Opportunity, Reynie discovers he must take several tests, each more puzzling than the last. During the course of his testing, Reynie meets several other gifted children with unique talents, but it is only when the final group of four has been selected that Reynie discovers what the Special Opportunity is: a chance to save the world. Mr. Benedict has uncovered a plot to brainwash the world using secret messages sent through television and radio waves and only these four gifted children, the Mysterious Benedict Society, have the power to infiltrate the island stronghold of the evil mastermind behind the plot. To save the day, the Society will need all their talents, but more importantly they must learn to work together ā and time is running out.
This book is about 4 unique, gifted children. Reynard Muldoon (Reynie), George Washington(hee hee....Sticky), Kate____(sorry I forgot the name), and Constance Contraire. They have to go through undercover work that no child would ever be able to endure. Will they be able to go through the adventure? Truly amazing!
Quotes
Add a Quote'' There will be no talking! '' boomed the pencil woman, who entered just then, slamming the door behind her. She strode briskly to the front of the room, carrying a tall stack of papers and a jar of pickles. ''If any child is caught cheating, then he or she will be executed ----'' The children gasped. ''I'm sorry, did I say executed? I meant to say escorted. Any child caught cheating will be escorted from the building at once.
They also knew they must act now or never. 'Tomorrow then,' Sticky said.
Reynie did stumble against something which - if seen from a distance and not stared at directly - might resemble a plan.
...and another [question] that required calculating how much time must pass before two speeding trains collided. (This last question Reynie answered with a thoughtful frown, noting in the margin that since the two trains were approaching each other on an empty stretch of track, it was likely the engineers would recognize the impending disaster and apply their brakes, thus avoiding the collision altogether.)
One musn't wear striped pants with a checkered shirt, Reynie. In fact, I believe those must belong to a roommate - they're at least a size too big. Also, it appears that one of your socks is blue and the other purple.

Comment
Add a CommentThe book was very smart and witty. I really enjoyed it.
Reminiscent of The Westing Game and filled with puzzles. The plot has lots of twists and turns as well as plenty of humor. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel someday.

So far I really love this book! It is one of the best books I have ever read! I really want to read the other books but first I have to finish this one! :)
A book about four gifted children set out on a secret mission to Nomansan Island in order to find clues and information linking to Mr.Curtains treacherous plan...
I really loved this book! It was awesome trying to solve the puzzles, codes and dilemmas alongside the characters and it was cool how each of the kids had a special role to play that, had they not been there, would've made accomplishing what they did impossible.
This was a very intelligent story, which is why I was suprised that this was a Junior YRCA book...it probably should have been intermediate. Really good story, though, and I liked all of the characters!
