I really liked Terrier. Beka is a kick-butt heroine that you can’t help but love. The plot was complicated and interesting. (I guessed who the bad guy was before Beka did, but I only realised it just before she did.) The setting was really cool. Imagine an old-fashioned busy market, but dirtier, and there you have Tortall’s underworld. It’s filled with rushers (thugs), pickpokets and theifs. Beka lived there until she was eight. I really loved the plot. It wasn’t predictable and the plot developed. It took some time to figure out what the main problem/conflict was, but that made it better. It wasn’t like here’s the problem, Beka makes a wrong guess, but then finds the solution. I could connect to Beka with her frustration. She wanted to capture every theif and rusher, but her mentors would never let her. She learned later on in the book that it wasn’t worth her time to go after everyone, she had to choose her fights. There were really cool words. Cove is one of my favourites. Roughly translated, it means man. A mot is a common woman. There weren’t any swear words that we use today, but there were obvious ones. Beka is caring, tough and straight to the point, but she had her flaws. Mainly her shyness. She could barely speak coherently during a trial for a rusher she’d arrested. The books are in journal form, first person, in Beka’s point of view. All of Tamora’s previous books are written in third person so, considering, she did a good job on the perspectives. (I say perpectives because there were some excerpts from other character’s journals at the beginning.) Realistically, no one would have the patience to write down full conversations and thoughts and feelings with the diligence Beka did, but it’s just a book. Also, Tamora said that Beka was doing it for practice for writing her reports for when she becomes a full-fledged Dog. The journal excerpts from the beginning were really boring, so I just skipped it (then read it because the book doesn’t make sense without it). I wish some of Beka’s friends were more "deep". Her friend Tansy was really annoying. One last thing that annoyed me to no end was Beka’s family. Her eldest younger sister was so rude and conceited, she made Tansy seem like an angel. affect other people in the story? What do their actions tell you about that character’s personality? How does the author help you feel that you are really there? What do you notice about their word choice and the “pull” of the narrator?

Have enjoyed Tamora Pierces Alanna and Keladry books immensely, so this book had a reputation to uphold. It did just that and i have the next one on hold. Great read and has you asking for more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And it's another good book by Tamora Pierce with yet another strong female as the main character. I enjoyed reading it, especially as it is written as Beka's diary. At first I was hesitant, not knowing if Pierce could pull off the diary or journal type of writing. But she did, leaving me to tell you that while this book may not be the best book ever written, it is certainly a good book and worth the read.

This was the first book I ever picked up of Tamora Pierce's. My roommate left his book out and I read it all in one day. It's long, but so worth it. You can't put it down, it's exciting, enthralling with a touch of magic and lots of mystery! I enjoyed this series immensely!

A typical Tamora Pierce book. I found it got boring after a while and that it was quite predictable, but it's a good read.

In the Tortall’s capital city of Corus, the Lord Provost and his guards – known as Dogs – keep peace and order. Beka Cooper is a trainee guard (a Puppy) and this book follows her first three months on the streets through the medium of her journal. Beka and her senior Dogs use their training and her special brand of magic in order to seek a child-stealer and murderer that has been masquerading for the last three years in a child’s nightmare fable. Pierce’s genre of choice is fantasy, but this book also owes a lot to the police procedural. Despite the length, it is a quick and engaging read, and anyone looking for a strong and capable heroine need look no further.

This is one of those books that I forgot how long the book was and ended up staying up until three in morning even though I knew I had to get up a few hours later. This is from an earlier time period of Tamora Pierce's other novels set in Tortall. There are some subtle similarities between the Terrier and some of Pierce's previous series (red heads, purple eyed cats, etc.), but it is original in many ways such as pigeons carrying around ghosts. If you've enjoyed Pierce's other works this one will be no disappointment. =)
